novaknowledge ISSUES report on Nova Scotia Assembly of Leaders & Calls for a new year's ResolutionS

novaknowledge has announced the release of the report on its first annual Nova Scotia Assembly of Leaders. On October 26, over 150 leaders from business, government, education and development came together for a unique one-day event at Saint Mary’s University.

This diverse collaboration was an opportunity to overcome barriers, celebrate successes, provide recommendations, and develop action items for Nova Scotia. All of which are outlined in the report.

“Over 80% of the participants in the Assembly requested that novaknowledge issue a report, lead action, and build on the momentum created by the leaders during the Assembly. This report is a positive and constructive step towards increased productivity, innovation, and new attitudes in this province”, said President & CEO Tim Outhit.

novaknowledge has established an Action Team to assemble a Leaders’ Council focused on Productivity, Growth, and Innovation, and will support the Council through its research and advocacy.

To stimulate action and progress in 2008, novaknowledge is challenging Nova Scotians to join-in and commit to its Innovation and Productivity New Years Resolutions for Nova Scotia.

“We need leaders, and all Nova Scotians, to become aware of the importance of growth, innovation, technology, and productivity to our future. If we can get them to undertake the forward thinking actions outlined in the Resolutions, we are confident that Nova Scotia will have a bright and prosperous future”, said Outhit.

“When welcoming participants to the Assembly of Leaders, I challenged novaknowledge and the gathered leaders to take action and make October 26, 2007 a turning point in Nova Scotia. We have done so by issuing this report, offering to establish the Leaders’ Council, and with the launch of the Resolution”, said novaknowledge Board of Directors Chair, Wayne Forster.

Recent bulletin from the President & CEO

Dear Members & Stakeholders,

A recent Conference Board of Canada report stated that a lack of innovation leads to mediocre socio-economic performance. The report looked at six areas – economy, innovation, environment, education and skills, and health and society – and noted that Canada scored a "D" in both the environmental and innovation domains.

This further confirms the need for novaknowledge to continue to advocate for innovation and for a knowledge-driven economy and society. novaknowledge has established “Action Teams” on critical issues such as access to venture capital, innovation and productivity, education, immigration, sustainable prosperity, and workforce issues. novaknowledge is indeed”behind forward thinking”.

During our Facing Forward Luncheon on June 13, 2007, we released highlights of our five year strategic plan, a new logo and tagline, a refreshed website, and a promotional video to over 350 guests.

The new business strategy builds on our successes and on what we heard in consultation with over 150 stakeholders.  Our membership recommended taking novaknowledge back to its roots as an umbrella organization, fostering broad-based conversations around the need for a strong knowledge-driven economy and society in the region. We must embrace the 21st century with “forward-thinking” leadership as we chart a future course.

Going forward, novaknowledge will focus on advocacy, networking, collaboration, and member-driven research.  Our results and recommendations will clearly advocate to government, business and citizens the policies and the cultural and attitudinal changes required to foster innovation and a knowledge-driven economy.

 This will be achieved by:

  • Living our brand every day.  Being the independent champion of the knowledge economy and the forum for forward-thinking;
  • Expanding our membership and volunteer base across Nova Scotia, and ultimately across Atlantic Canada;
  • Developing products and projects that align with our mission and vision;
  • Supporting our products and projects with strong sales and marketing strategies;
  • Improving our research and communication capacity.

We cannot do this alone. We need like-minded individuals to help us succeed in building strong partnerships across the province and the region, with business, education, government, and community-based organizations to foster a common vision, spark forward thinking, and build prosperity through a strong knowledge-driven economy.

As previously announced, novaknowledge will be hosting in collaboration with government, business, and development organizations an Assembly of Leaders in September in Halifax. This forum will bring together CEOs and leaders from across the province to help define and promote a knowledge-driven vision for our province.

I encourage you to view our new promotional video.  We will shortly be adding the full-text of the member testimonials contained in our promotional video to our website.

Help us get "behind forward thinking" by sharing your comments and suggestions on how we can drive the knowledge economy. Your expertise is vital to our success, so please let me know if you’d like to be a part of a novaknowledge “Action Team” or to be part of the Assembly of Leaders organizing committee.

Best regards,

Tim Outhit
