Computers for Schools

Reducing the environmental impact of electronic waste

On February 9, 2005, Nova Scotia’s Department of Environment and Labour proposed new regulations banning computers, televisions and other electronics from landfills.

novaknowledge has been proactive on the technology recycling front through its Computers for Schools program that refurbishes used computer equipment for distribution into Nova Scotia’s schools at no charge.

In January 1994, novaknowledge in partnership with Nova Scotia's Department of Education and Aliant Pioneer Volunteers developed the Technology Recycling Program (TRP), which later became known as Computers for Schools, Libraries, First Nation schools and related educational organizations, when it was rolled out nationally by Industry Canada.

The Computers for Schools program is a unique public/private partnership between novaknowledge, Industry Canada and Nova Scotia Department of Education with support from the Aliant Pioneer Volunteersthe Nova Scotia School Boards Association and the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.  The Program also has the support of such international companies as Microsoft and CN Rail

To date over 42,000 computers have been delivered to organizations in Nova Scotia and we expect to deliver another 4,000 this year!
