Forward Thinking – An opportunity

On October 28 our speaker invited local companies to support a landmark cancer study in Nova Scotia.  Dr. Louise Parker, Atlantic PATH researcher, presented an overview of the cancer research project.  This research is particularly important in the Atlantic region as we have the highest rates of cancer in Canada.  This new front in the fight against cancer in Atlantic Canada needs 30,000 individuals to lend a hand.

The Atlantic Path is part of a national study which will follow the health of 300,000 Canadians between the ages of 35 and 69 for up to 30 years to determine what role lifestyle, the environment and genetics play in the development of cancer and other health issues.  Dr. Parker says, “The information obtained through this study will provide an enormous bank of information which researchers will be able to draw upon to help identify the causes of cancer and, in turn, develop better detection, treatment and prevention methods.  Future generations – the children and grandchildren of our study participants – will benefit from this knowledge.”

Efforts to recruit 30,000 study participants in Atlantic Canada have moved into high gear.  People who want to learn more about the study can go to the Atlantic Path website at www.atlanticpath.ca or call 1-877-285-7284.

Let’s get on board!  By promoting the research project to employees and supporting staff participation, local companies can play an important role.

Environmental Performance of Agriculture in NS

HALIFAX, NS – September 16, 2009  Today novaknowledge and the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA) released a report assessing the environmental performance of Nova Scotia’s agricultural sector.  Since 1995, under  the leadership of the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture (NSFA), the industry has developed programs and initiatives to assess and address environmental risk.  Determined to understand progress to date, the NSFA commissioned novaknowledge to produce a Report Card.

Update - Summer 2009

Who are we?

novaknowledge is a non-partisan and non-profit organization that advocates for a sustainable and competitive knowledge-driven economy in Nova Scotia.  To achieve its goals novaknowledge brings together smart people - leaders from business, government, education and community development - to provide valuable information and unique perspectives to important issues.  We not only offer excellent networking, but by encouraging leaders to have their say, we are informing future advocacy and strategic approaches.

Recent projects - This past year’s projects included evaluating the success of Nova Scotia’s solid waste strategy, which led to the development of a model for achieving sustainable change.  This deeper understanding of sustainable change has been incorporated into novaknowledge’s business processes and influences our forward thinking leadership. The SPARK Awards were launched this year and are designed to recognize forward think business, community, government, and education leaders throughout Nova Scotia.

Impact - Over the past 16 years, novaknowledge members have had a hand in leading forward thinking and laying the groundwork for sustainable change in Nova Scotia.  One example is our report card work on “The environmental economy:  seizing opportunities,” which raised awareness and influenced stakeholders.  The result - a provincial government economic policy shift to Opportunities for Sustainable Prosperity and the adoption of a forward thinking Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act, which brings Nova Scotia onto the world stage as a leader in environmental sustainability.  Members have also influenced Nova Scotia’s policies on workforce issues, education, innovation, immigration, and access to venture capital policies.

Our process - Every project and event that novaknowledge undertakes is focused on building an innovative and competitive knowledge-driven (“new”) economy for Nova Scotia. They are driven by the knowledge, expertise, forward thinking, and enthusiasm of our members. In collaboration with our volunteers, novaknowledge staff works hard to ensure that you obtain solid value for your investment.
